Before every pilgrimage, I sit quietly and wait.
Not for a plane. Not for a bus or a fellow pilgrim.
But for a prayer.
A 7-word prayer, to be exact.
It’s a ritual I learned years ago and have carried with me on every Camino since. Before I leave home, I set aside time each morning to sit in silence—sometimes for days—until the prayer finds me. Seven words, no more, no less. No extra fluff, no theological gymnastics. Just a simple phrase that feels… right. Grounded. Guiding.

Boiling Down Your Meditations to a 7 Word Prayer
It takes time to distill the meditations of the heart into a mere seven words. I needed a prayer that would keep my eyes open to God—
not just in the obvious beauty of nature, where I’ve always seen Him clearly.
But in the quieter, messier places, too.
This time, I longed to see with spiritual eyes—
to notice His presence in the people I met,
in unexpected blessings…
and even in the aggravating disruptions to my carefully laid plans.
Before my most recent pilgrimage—a winter solo walk along the Camino de Madrid—the words that came to me were:
“What are You doing in the disruptions?”
Not exactly warm and fuzzy. Not something you’d stitch onto a pillow or paint in cursive across your living room wall. But it landed in my spirit with clarity. And soon enough, it made perfect sense.
A Winter Camino Filled With Disruptions
The Camino de Madrid isn’t the most popular of routes—and in winter, it’s practically deserted. I walked 200 miles through flooded paths, snowy fields, and fog so thick I couldn’t see the waymarks. I was cold. I was alone. I was challenged.
But I was never lost. Not spiritually, anyway.
That 7-word prayer followed me like a shadow:
- When the trail was flooded and impassable.
- When my host bailed last-minute, leaving me scrambling with nowhere to stay.
- When I cried in frustration with no one around to hear it.
“What are You doing in the disruptions?”
It became my mantra. My centering line. My question to God and the answer all at once.

How to Find Your Own 7-Word Prayer
This isn’t just for pilgrims walking across Spain. You can use this practice right where you are—before a journey, during a transition or even at the start of a new season of life.
Here’s how I recommend receiving your own 7-word prayer, adapted from The Soul of a Pilgrim by Christine Valters Paintner:
- Sit in Silence – Give yourself space and time. Let the noise of the world fall away.
- Ask for Grace – What do you need right now? What is the prayer of your heart?
- Listen for the Words – You may hear a phrase, a whisper or a few scattered words that slowly come together.
- Let It Settle – Don’t force it. Let the prayer evolve. Let it feel true.
- Write It Down – In your journal, on a sticky note, or on a stone you carry in your pocket.
- Repeat Your 7-Word Prayer Daily – Like prayer beads or centering prayer, return to your seven words daily. Let them ground you.
- Monasterio de Nuestra Senora de la Soterrana

Pilgrimage Teaches Us to Travel Light—Even with Word Prayers
Seven words may not seem like much. But when the wind is howling, your rain jacket is failing in the sleet storm and the path ahead looks uncertain, seven words can feel like a lifeline. They can root you in the present, whisper courage when you falter, and invite you to see the sacred—even in the disruptions.
So I ask you now:
What are you, fellow pilgrim, doing in the disruptions?
And maybe more importantly—
What is the grace you’re being offered through them?
Once you’ve let roll around in your mind for a bit, leave a comment below. I’m eager to hear from you and I respond to each comment.

Hi Stacey – my favorite 7 word prayer is The Jesus Prayer…’Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me’. There’s a great book, “The Way of a Pilgrim” by a Russian priest dedicated to this prayer. Very powerful…+
