As UNSTOPPABLE Stacey, I’ve walked countless pilgrimages—from the Camino de Santiago to the Wisconsin Way—and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that packing smart is key to a successful journey.
Over the years, I’ve honed my list of essentials, and these are the items I never leave home without. If I do happen to forget one, you can bet it’s the first thing I buy when I arrive at my destination!
If you don’t have time to read the entire list, you can find all 12 items in one place. I’ve done all the shopping for you at REI, Amazon and Backcountry and put them together here:

My 12 Must-Have Items for Any Walking Pilgrimage
After 20 years and 17 Caminos, I’ve learned what truly matters on the trail. I created this 12 Essentials Camino Packing List so you can walk lighter, feel confident and enjoy every step of your pilgrimage.
The Essentials for Happy Feet
Two pairs of Injinji liner crew toesocks: These miracle socks prevent blisters by eliminating skin-on-skin friction between your toes. They’re lightweight, moisture-wicking, and my secret weapon for blister-free miles.
Body Glide: This foot treatment is a lifesaver for preventing chafing and hot spots, especially on long days of walking.
Superfeet footbed inserts: These provide the support and comfort your feet need when pounding the trail all day. I get mine at Backcountry!
Gear That Keeps Me Comfortable
Hoka hiking shoes: Whether you choose women’s or men’s styles, Hokas offer incredible cushioning and stability for long-distance walking.
Buff: A versatile accessory that protects your neck from sunburn or doubles as a headband when the heat kicks in.
Marmot rain jacket: Lightweight yet durable, this jacket keeps me dry during unexpected downpours. Check it out now on REI.
Sunglasses: I swear by sports sunglasses with polarized or photochromic lenses for optimal eye protection. Models like the OUTDOOR Polarized lenses or PLANET Polarized lenses are perfect for pilgrimages like the Camino de Santiago, offering comfort and protection from intense sunlight.
For Restful Nights
Ultra-light down sleeping bag: Compact and warm, this sleeping bag is perfect for pilgrim accommodations or outdoor camping. Check it out now at Backcountry
Hydration and Tools
Reusable hydration bladder: Staying hydrated is non-negotiable on pilgrimage, and a bladder makes sipping on the go easy.
Swiss Army knife: A multi-functional tool that comes in handy for everything from slicing fruit to fixing gear.
Hiking poles: These are indispensable for reducing strain on your knees and improving balance on uneven terrain.
Easy Hitch Phone Anchor + Tether: This ingenious device ensures your phone stays secure and within easy reach, preventing accidental drops and loss. It’s especially useful for capturing memories without worrying about your phone falling out of your hands. I found this at REI.

Imagine the sinking feeling of stopping mid-walk on the Camino, heart racing as you frantically search for your phone—your lifeline for navigation, photos and connection. Before my 2018 Camino Primitivo trek, I faced that fear too. Then I discovered the phone shoulder pocket, a simple yet brilliant solution recommended by FarOut guides when they hired me to map the route.
This water-resistant carrier attaches securely with Velcro to any backpack shoulder strap, belt or padded strap, keeping your phone right where you need it—safe, accessible and worry-free.
No more endless patting of pockets or digging through your bag. It’s saved me countless moments of stress and precious time. Don’t let the fear of losing your phone shadow your journey—get yours today and walk with confidence.

Traveling soon? Don’t forget to pack these essential items
Here are 4 often-forgotten items you don’t want to leave home without:
- I would have been lost in Europe without this power bank: Anker Nano Power Bank, 10K, 45W, 8.1 oz. Just imagine your phone running out of battery while you’re exploring London.
- And speaking of power, you def don’t want to forget a plug adapter – this is the one I use – I love it because it has 3 USB-C ports!
- You can’t beat this Sea to Summit premium neck pillow in terms of minimum weight and packed size. Who doesn’t want to get some shuteye on those long flights?
- I’m hooked on longer rain jackets that look as good on Paris boulevards as protect you on the trail.
📌 Bonus: Here’s the carry-on I swear by! My travel-tough Samsonite bags have lasted decades.
