The red rocks are calling—but before you can watch Cathedral Rock glow at sunset or wind your way through Oak Creek Canyon, you have one important decision to make: What is the closest airport to Sedona?
The answer may surprise you. Sedona has its own airport perched spectacularly on a mesa above town, but it does not have scheduled commercial airline service. For most travelers, Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) is the closest airport to Sedona with commercial flights, just 26 miles north of town and about a 45-minute drive away.
But closest doesn’t always mean best.
Depending on where you’re coming from, ticket prices and whether you plan to rent a car, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport may make your Sedona trip easier—and possibly cheaper.
So before you book that flight, let me help you choose the airport that gets you into red-rock country with the least amount of hassle.
📌 STAY UNSTOPPABLE TIP: Don’t automatically book Phoenix just because it has more flights. Check fares into Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG), too. You may pay a little more for the ticket, but arriving just 45 minutes from Sedona can buy you something even better: more time among the red rocks.

What Is the Closest Airport to Sedona, Arizona?
Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) is the closest commercial airport to Sedona, Arizona. It is approximately 26 miles north of Sedona, and you can usually make the drive in about 45 minutes.
That’s wonderfully close compared with landing in Phoenix and spending another two hours on the road.
And the drive from Flagstaff to Sedona isn’t just transportation. It’s part of the experience.
You’ll leave Flagstaff’s tall ponderosa pine forest and descend through twisting Oak Creek Canyon. Somewhere along the way, the landscape begins changing. Pines give way to canyon walls, sandstone begins glowing red, and suddenly you realize:
You’ve arrived in Sedona.
As a northern Arizona travel writer, that’s one of the things I love about arriving from Flagstaff. You don’t simply drive into Sedona—you descend into it.

Wait—Doesn't Sedona Have an Airport?
It does.
Sedona Airport (SEZ) sits high above town on Table Top Mountain, and it may have one of the most dramatic airport settings in America.
But here’s the catch: there is no scheduled commercial airline service at Sedona Airport. The airport primarily serves private aircraft, charter flights and aviation activities. Sedona Airport itself recommends that most long-distance visitors use Phoenix Sky Harbor, Flagstaff or Prescott.
So unless you’re arriving aboard a private or charter aircraft, searching for a Delta, American, Southwest or United flight into SEZ won’t get you very far.
The good news? You’ve still got several surprisingly convenient choices.

Is Flagstaff the Best Airport for Sedona?
If your priority is getting as close to Sedona as possible, Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is hard to beat.
FLG is a small regional airport, which means you don’t have miles of concourses, trains between terminals or that familiar big-airport feeling that your vacation has somehow begun with a forced march.
Instead, you land in the mountains.
Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is surrounded by ponderosa pine forest at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet. You’ll step off your regional aircraft into fresh mountain air, collect your luggage, pick up a rental car and be on your way.
American Airlines currently serves Flagstaff, with nonstop service including Phoenix and Dallas-Fort Worth; airline schedules can change seasonally, so check current flights when booking.
For travelers who can find a good connection into FLG, this is my favorite option.
You’re spending less time driving and more time in Sedona—which could mean an extra sunset, hike, dinner or glass of Arizona wine instead of another hour behind the wheel.
What Is It Like Flying Into Flagstaff for Sedona?
Flying into Flagstaff feels very different from arriving at a major international airport.
You’ll often travel aboard a regional jet. These smaller aircraft typically have narrower cabins and less overhead-bin space than the big jets you’re accustomed to flying on longer routes.
But there’s an upside.
Small plane. Small airport. Small hassle.
After landing, you can collect your bags and rental car without navigating an enormous terminal. Then point your vehicle south toward Sedona.
And this is where your vacation really begins.
The drive follows State Route 89A through one of northern Arizona’s most beautiful landscapes. You’ll descend thousands of feet through Oak Creek Canyon before emerging among Sedona’s unmistakable red sandstone formations.
Just remember that 89A is a winding mountain highway. Give yourself extra time during busy weekends, winter weather or road construction.
Phoenix Sky Harbor: Best Major Airport Near Sedona
For many travelers, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) will actually be the most practical airport for Sedona.
It isn’t the closest—but it has something Flagstaff can’t match:
Choices.
Phoenix Sky Harbor is approximately two hours from Sedona and offers service from 24 airlines, with nonstop flights to more than 130 domestic destinations as well as numerous international cities.
That can mean cheaper airfares, better flight times and fewer connections.
So don’t automatically book FLG simply because it’s the closest airport to Sedona. Compare the entire journey.
If reaching Flagstaff requires an awkward connection, a long layover or hundreds of dollars more, flying nonstop into Phoenix and renting a car may get you to Sedona sooner.
And once you leave metropolitan Phoenix, the drive north is surprisingly scenic.
You’ll climb out of the Sonoran Desert on Interstate 17, watching saguaros slowly disappear as the elevation rises. Exit toward Sedona, and before long those famous red rocks begin appearing ahead of you.
That’s a pretty spectacular welcome.
Do I Need to Rent a Car From Phoenix to Sedona?
Not necessarily.
Travelers who don’t want to drive can take a shuttle between Phoenix Sky Harbor and Sedona. Groome Transportation currently operates multiple daily departures between PHX and Sedona, with advance reservations recommended.
That can be an excellent choice if you’re staying in central Sedona and plan to use local transportation, tours or Sedona’s transit system once you arrive.
But if you want to explore farther afield—Cottonwood, Jerome, the Verde Valley, Flagstaff or the Grand Canyon—a rental car gives you considerably more freedom.
For many visitors, Sedona becomes part of a larger northern Arizona road trip, and having your own wheels makes those spontaneous What’s down that road? moments possible.
What About Flying Into Prescott?
Here’s an airport many Sedona travelers overlook.
Prescott Regional Airport (PRC) is approximately a 90-minute drive from Sedona, making it another viable alternative. Sedona Airport lists Prescott among the regional airports serving visitors to the area.
United Express currently serves Prescott, including flights connecting with Denver and Los Angeles.
Would I choose Prescott before Flagstaff? Usually not if Sedona is your only destination.
But if airfare works in your favor—or you’re building Prescott, Jerome, Cottonwood and Sedona into one Arizona road trip—it suddenly becomes much more interesting.
Sometimes the “best airport” has less to do with mileage and more to do with what you want to see along the way.
Is Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Near Sedona?
Another possibility is Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA), particularly if Allegiant or Sun Country serves your home airport.
It’s approximately 2½ hours from Sedona, according to the Sedona Chamber of Commerce.
Mesa Gateway is farther from Sedona than Phoenix Sky Harbor, so I wouldn’t choose it simply for location. But low-cost fares can occasionally make the extra driving worthwhile.
My advice: compare the total cost rather than airfare alone.
Add up your ticket, checked luggage, rental car, fuel and your time. Saving $80 on a flight doesn’t feel like much of a bargain if you add an unnecessary connection or several extra hours of travel.
Closest Airports to Sedona: Which One Should You Choose?
Here’s the quick comparison I would use when planning your trip:
| Airport | Code | Approx. drive to Sedona | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flagstaff Pulliam Airport | FLG | 45 minutes | Closest commercial airport |
| Prescott Regional Airport | PRC | 90 minutes | Denver/LA connections and Arizona road trips |
| Phoenix Sky Harbor | PHX | 2 hours | Most flights and usually the greatest fare choices |
| Phoenix-Mesa Gateway | AZA | 2½ hours | Some low-cost airline routes |
| Sedona Airport | SEZ | In Sedona | Private and charter aircraft; no scheduled commercial airline service |
Drive times are approximate and can change with traffic, construction and weather. Sedona’s official visitor resources put Flagstaff at about 45 minutes, Prescott at roughly 90 minutes, Phoenix Sky Harbor at about two hours and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway at approximately 2½ hours.
So What’s the Best Airport to Fly Into for Sedona?
For the shortest drive, book Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG).
For the greatest choice of flights and often better fares, check Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).
That’s the comparison I would make first.
Search your home airport to both FLG and PHX. Then look at the door-to-Sedona travel time, not simply the scheduled flight time.
You may discover that paying slightly more to fly into Flagstaff buys you something increasingly valuable on vacation:
time.
On the other hand, a convenient nonstop into Phoenix might get you to the red rocks faster than connecting through another airport to reach Flagstaff.
There isn’t one right answer for everyone. There is, however, a right answer for your trip.
Can I Visit Sedona and the Grand Canyon on the Same Trip?
Absolutely—and this is where flying into Flagstaff becomes particularly attractive.
Sedona and Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim are close enough to combine into one northern Arizona vacation. You can spend several days hiking, eating and exploring Sedona before heading north through Flagstaff toward the Grand Canyon.
If both destinations are on your bucket list, check flights into FLG before automatically booking Phoenix.
You might be surprised by how much windshield time you save.
