The Mystical Route Unfolds
1. Cathedral of Celestial Whispers
Begin your quest in the Cathedral of the Assumption, where the intimate chapel of San Juan de la Cruz holds the first echoes of his spiritual genius.
I spent more time than I planned at Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y San Frutos because it was so spiritually inviting.
The exterior is reminiscent of the Burgos Cathedral, but the interior reminded me of Salamanca’s cathedral.
This is the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain. Don’t miss the Santiago chapel or the art gallery under the cloister.
2. Convent of Feminine Mysticism
Navigate to the Convent of Discalced Carmelites of San José, a sanctuary of silent contemplation within the city walls.
My favorite mystic, St Teresa of Avila founded this convent at this spot. Her confident and follower, St John of the Cross, gave spiritual direction here. Then called Fr Juan de la Cruz.
3. The Saint's Silent Guardian
Encounter the sculptural spirit of Saint John, masterfully crafted by José María García Moro – a bronze sentinel watching over his beloved Segovia.

4. Arch of Refuge: A Symbolic Passage
Pause at the Puerta de Santiago, a threshold where stone and spirit intersect, whispering tales of spiritual transformation.
5. Poet's Garden: A Landscape of Metaphors
Wander through the Garden of Poets / Jardin de los poetas, where each plant and pathway resonates with the symbolic language of Saint John’s mystical poetry.
6. Bridge Over River
7. Final Sanctuary: Tomb of a Mystic, St John of the Cross
Conclude your pilgrimage at the Convento de San Juan de la Cruz, where his mortal remains rest, inviting contemplation of life’s deepest mysteries.
Of course, we know that this is not St John of the Cross ‘ final resting place. Look heavenward, pilgrim!
Convento, Iglesia y sepulcro de San Juan de la Cruz, P. Segundo Rincón, 5
Journey Highlights:
- Duration: Approximately two hours
- Difficulty: Contemplative walking
- Spiritual Intensity: High
- Poetic Inspiration: Guaranteed
Prepare to walk not just a path but a profound spiritual journey through the living poetry of Saint John of the Cross.
Traveling soon? Don’t forget to pack these essential items
Here are 4 often-forgotten items you don’t want to leave home without:
- I would have been lost in Europe without this power bank: Anker Nano Power Bank, 10K, 45W, 8.1 oz. Just imagine your phone running out of battery while you’re exploring London.
- And speaking of power, you def don’t want to forget a plug adapter – this is the one I use – I love it because it has 3 USB-C ports!
- You can’t beat this Sea to Summit premium neck pillow in terms of minimum weight and packed size. Who doesn’t want to get some shuteye on those long flights?
- I’m hooked on longer rain jackets that look as good on Paris boulevards as protect you on the trail.
📌 Bonus: Here’s the carry-on I swear by! My travel-tough Samsonite bags have lasted decades.

I love Segovia! Ann Howley and I spent a couple of days there on our way back to Madrid after volunteering as hospitaleras in Astorga. I didn’t know anything about this, but we walked all around. You made me want to go back!
