What makes this accommodation unique and special is the attention to interior design and contemporary creature comforts during the redesign of this historic 1865 accommodation.

Rooms 10/10

The living room and dining room are designed for lingering. The welcoming ambiance includes a comfortable couch and a long wooden dining table that seats eight. Games, art supplies and books help you relax and tarry. The dark ash wood floors and oriental rugs in cream and gray tones create a warm feeling. The lighting is good and well thought out.

The antique travel trunk reused as a coffee table in the living area reflects Dave’s penchant for travel. In fact, many of the wood antique furniture pieces throughout the well-lit 2-bedroom living space were brought from Hungary, where he lived for eight years.

Live plants are always a nice touch in any living space, and at Grace Adventure House, there were two healthy green plants.

The five front windows offer views of the Americana turn-of-the-century homes across the street, which have nicely tended, large lawns.

Cream City bricks from the original structure are highlighted sparingly; cream and gray tones of the chimney were revealed in the recent remodel and redesign of this mid-1800s structure. The prominent and much-loved cream or light yellow-colored brick made from clay around Milwaukee was used for building houses and churches during the mid-late 1800s.

Two desks with plenty of lighting, one in the living room’s vestibule area and the other in a small study—or prayer closet—off the second bedroom, were perfect for writers like me. The study area is not really a closet because of its window, cozy desk space and bookshelf, btw.

Tech amenities: A large smart TV with a Visio sound bar, subwoofer, and wireless streaming capabilities has Docking stations for playing your own streaming. I watched two movies without hooking my devices up or docking them.

This unit has two large bedrooms, complete with closets and decorated with antique wooden furniture. The queen bed was comfortable and made for dreaming.

The bed linens had modern patterns and comfy pillows. I loved the wooden luggage stand where I placed my suitcase.

The kitchen at Grace Adventure House

The kitchen is equipped to accommodate the most discriminating cook. Organic teas, coffee, a coffee grinder, a French press, a Keurig coffee maker with pods, and a kettle for hot water are also available. I tried new-to-me coffee flavors in the Keurig. There was more selection than you would find at typical hotels in Port Washington WI.

A full kitchen with modern white cabinetry and dark countertops for a sleek design is complete with a wooden drop leaf kitchen table, two chairs, refrigerator and freezer, and an electric range with oven and microwave.

You’ll also find kitchen utensils and a large spice selection but no high-top counter, dishwasher or ice maker. The wide plank, rustic barn wood floor is decorated with woven textile rugs.

bathroom with all new white cabinetry, dark countertop and lots of lighting

One large bathroom with a washer and dryer serves Grace Adventure House. The new tub and shower unit sports all-new faucets and floors. There is an ample supply of fluffy cotton towels.

The only niggle was the ticking clock hanging on the wall in my bedroom. I moved it to the dining room on the second night of my stay.

For your added security, Grace Adventure House has video surveillance covering the exterior of the premises.

Food & drink

Grace Adventure House is within walking distance of many coffee shops, fine dining, restaurants, breweries and one winery. Check out the full lineup at

Access for guests with disabilities?

Not accessible because of no elevator. You’ll be in the upstairs apartment, which is the door to the right as you face the building. You can park around the back (use the driveway to the LEFT of the building). A ramp on the east side of the building eases transporting suitcases. However, there is a flight of 14 stairs up to the second floor.

Grace Adventure House is family-friendly and dog-friendly. It has two bedrooms that adjoin the living area. The dining room has plenty of space for large family meals or board games.
