Some of my favorite travel discoveries haven’t happened hundreds of miles from home—they’ve happened just a few blocks away. All it took was putting my phone away and heading out on foot. Whether I’m exploring a historic neighborhood, joining a walking tour, or discovering a café I’d somehow overlooked, I’m reminded that the best screen-free activities often help us see our own city with fresh eyes.
It’s become second nature to reach for our phones whenever we have a free moment. We scroll through social media while waiting in line, binge-watch shows instead of going out, and often know more about places halfway around the world than neighborhoods just a few miles from home.
A digital detox doesn’t have to mean disappearing into the wilderness for a week. Sometimes, the best ways to unplug are through screen-free activities that help you rediscover your own city. Every community is filled with fascinating history, beautiful parks, incredible food, and hidden stories waiting to be explored. And all without being glued to a screen.
If you’re ready to swap endless scrolling for real-world experiences, here are five screen-free activities that will help you reconnect with your city and the people who make it unique.

1.) Food Tours: A Delicious Screen-Free Activity
One of the most enjoyable ways to rediscover your city is through its food. Local food tours introduce you to restaurants, bakeries, markets, and family-owned businesses that often escape the attention of even longtime residents. More importantly, they reveal the stories behind the dishes and the people who prepare them.
Take the Venice Beach Food Tour, for example. Visitors explore one of Los Angeles’s most vibrant neighborhoods while sampling cuisine influenced by cultures from around the globe. Every stop reflects the creativity, diversity, and coastal character that have made Venice Beach such a beloved destination.

The best food tours are about more than eating. They connect cuisine with history, immigration, art, architecture, and neighborhood traditions, allowing participants to understand a community through one of its most universal languages. You may arrive expecting a great meal, but you’ll leave with a greater appreciation for your city’s cultural richness and likely a list of restaurants you’ll want to revisit.
2.) Enjoy Screen-Free Activities in Local Parks
You don’t have to leave the city to spend time in nature. Nearly every community has parks, walking trails, nature preserves, or scenic green spaces that offer a welcome escape from daily routines. A leisurely walk beneath towering trees or alongside a quiet stream provides a refreshing contrast to hours spent indoors staring at screens.
For an even greater sense of adventure, challenge yourself to navigate without GPS. Pick up a traditional paper map from a visitor center or local park office and see where curiosity leads you. You may discover neighborhoods, scenic overlooks, or hidden trails you’ve never noticed before.
Without constant notifications competing for your attention, you’ll begin noticing the sounds of birds, the changing seasons, interesting wildlife, and conversations with the people around you.
Nature has an incredible ability to slow us down. Sometimes all it takes is an afternoon outdoors to remember what uninterrupted attention feels like.
3.) Ghost Tours Reveal the Hidden History of Your City
Your hometown has stories. It also has secrets. A great ghost tour goes beyond the things that go bump in the night, uncovering the hidden layers of history that most people walk past every day. While traditional sightseeing tours often focus on famous landmarks and well-known events, ghost tours venture into the forgotten corners of local history. The stories that get revealed are mysterious, tragic, inspiring, and deeply human.
The best guides are passionate storytellers who weave together history, folklore, architecture, and local culture into an experience that’s as educational as it is entertaining. They don’t shy away from difficult chapters of the past because history deserves to be told honestly, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Along the way, you’ll discover historic buildings you’ve never noticed, hear legends passed down through generations, and gain a deeper appreciation for the community you call home.
Whether you believe in ghosts isn’t really the point. The experience encourages you to put your phone away, look up at the buildings around you, and engage with your surroundings in a completely different way. Sometimes the most fascinating stories are hiding in plain sight.
4.) Explore Your City's Architecture on Foot
How often do you really look at the buildings around you? Most of us hurry past remarkable architecture every day without giving it a second thought. Yet every city tells its story through its buildings, from soaring skyscrapers and elegant courthouses to neighborhood churches, historic theaters, converted warehouses, and century-old homes. Exploring on foot is one of the simplest screen-free activities, allowing you to notice details that are impossible to appreciate from behind a windshield or while staring at your phone.
Spend an afternoon walking a few unfamiliar blocks with one simple goal: Pay attention. Notice decorative brickwork, carved stone details, stained glass windows, vintage signs, hidden courtyards, ornate balconies, and architectural styles that reveal different eras of your city’s development. Many communities also offer self-guided architecture walks or historical markers that explain the significance of notable buildings. If you’d rather explore with a guide, many ghost tours also highlight remarkable architecture while sharing the fascinating history behind some of your city’s oldest buildings.
Looking up instead of down at your phone often reveals an entirely new appreciation for places you’ve been passing for years. Every building has a story. Sometimes all you have to do is slow down long enough to notice it.
5.) Haunted Pub Crawls Offer a Different Kind of Night Out
If your idea of relaxing involves meeting friends for a drink, consider adding a little history to the evening. A haunted pub crawl combines visits to historic bars and taverns with fascinating stories about the people and events that shaped your city. Between stops, knowledgeable guides recount tales of infamous crimes, mysterious disappearances, legendary spirits, and unexplained encounters tied to some of the oldest establishments in town.
The NYC Boos and Booze Tour is the perfect example. As participants stroll through Greenwich Village beneath the glow of city lights, they encounter stories that reveal a completely different side of New York. From the mysterious Gay Street Phantom and the curious legend surrounding Howdy Doody to reports of a terrifying face-melting entity associated with Marie’s Crisis, the evening blends local folklore with authentic neighborhood history.
Whether every ghost story is fact or folklore is almost beside the point. The experience encourages conversation, exploration, and genuine connection with both the city and the people sharing the journey alongside you. It’s a refreshing alternative to spending another evening staring at a television mounted above a crowded bar.

Traveling soon? Don’t forget to pack these essential items
Here are 4 often-forgotten items you don’t want to leave home without:
- I would have been lost in Europe without this power bank: Anker Nano Power Bank, 10K, 45W, 8.1 oz. Just imagine your phone running out of battery while you’re exploring London.
- And speaking of power, you def don’t want to forget a plug adapter – this is the one I use – I love it because it has 3 USB-C ports!
- You can’t beat this Sea to Summit premium neck pillow in terms of minimum weight and packed size. Who doesn’t want to get some shuteye on those long flights?
- I’m hooked on longer rain jackets that look as good on Paris boulevards as protect you on the trail.
